Message: Only variable references should be returned by reference

I am just setting up Fuel. Unfortunately, it's with IIS. I've set up the rewrite (appropriately, I hope). I currently don't have a domain (yet), just the computer name.

When I bring up the site from a remote computer, I get the following:

Message: Only variable references should be returned by reference

Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong?

Btw, totally given up on IIS and now using XAMPP. Working great.

The latest 1.3 update has removed hopefully most (if not all) of those only variable references messages.
