Overriding fuel_lang default values.

Is there a way to change a fuel_lang value (ex $lang['page_layout_vars']) without editing the fuel_lang.php file in modules/fuel/language/english? I really try to avoid changing anything inside of the Fuel module as it really complicates upgrades in the future.
