Change the layout of checkbox form element

Hi,
is there a possibility to change the layout of a generated checkbox field in simple module?
I am looking for a possibility to add a line break after n elements, so that the list won't run out of the right edge of the screen

I'd do it using CSS's :nth-child feature.
