navigation active class on "a" instead of "li"

I'm trying to create a top menu using the fuel_nav function, however my menu structure has the active class on the "a" for the active menu item. fuel_nav seem only able to place the active class on the enclosing "li" rather than the "a" within it. Is there anyway possible I can achieve this behaviour?

Can't you still target it with CSS li.active>a?
